Library and Archive
The Library and Archive were set up following the creation of the Museum of the Galician People in 1977. In addition to supporting the Museum’s research and activity programmes, they are also the custodians of the documents, ensuring that they are available for consultation by anyone with an interest in our culture.
In 2012, the library, which is open to the public but privately owned, was declared a Library of Special Interest for Galicia by the autonomous community government (Xunta de Galicia).
The Library collection is made up of more than 100,000 volumes, including books and periodicals. The Archive occupies more than 600 linear metres (including manuscripts and typescripts). Completing the collection is a series of materials featuring unique characteristics, ranging from photographs, postcards and maps and plans, to posters, sheet music, parchments and pamphlets, etc., spanning a broad chronology from the 12th to the 21st centuries and a wide range of subjects. Particularly worthy of mention is the wealth of documents relating to Galicia and the field of the Humanities.
Most of the holdings come from generous donations, institutional exchanges and, albeit to a lesser extent, acquisitions.
